Do I need a guitar before my first lesson?
No. You may borrow one of Payton’s guitars for your first lesson. He can then guide you toward an instrument that fits your size, musical interests, and budget before you buy.
What is a good age for a child to begin guitar lessons?
Readiness matters more than a specific birthday. Many children can begin around ages six to eight when they can follow short instructions and comfortably hold an appropriately sized guitar. The free lesson is a relaxed way to see whether the timing feels right.
Am I too old to learn guitar?
Not at all. Adults can begin at any age, and many enjoy learning even more because they already know the music they love and why they want to play it.
Should a beginner start on acoustic or electric guitar?
Either can be a great first instrument. The right choice depends on the music you want to play, physical comfort, and the sound that keeps you motivated. Payton will help you compare the options.
How often should I take lessons and practice?
Most students benefit from one lesson each week and short, consistent practice sessions between lessons. Ten to twenty focused minutes most days is usually more productive than one long practice session.
How long does it take to learn guitar?
Most beginners can start playing simple chords and recognizable songs within the first several weeks. Lasting confidence develops over time, and the pace depends on goals, practice consistency, and prior musical experience.
Do you teach left-handed students?
Yes. Payton is left-handed and plays guitar right-handed, so he understands the question personally. He will help each student choose the approach that feels comfortable and practical for them.
Will I have to read traditional sheet music?
Not necessarily. Lessons may use chord diagrams, tablature, rhythm notation, listening, and standard notation as appropriate. The method is matched to your goals and the kind of music you want to play.
What styles of music can I learn?
Lessons can cover rock, blues, country, folk, pop, metal, jazz, fingerstyle, singer-songwriter accompaniment, and more. Strong fundamentals are taught through music that is meaningful to you.
Where are lessons held?
Lessons are held by appointment in a comfortable private home studio at 2283 Encino Loop in San Antonio. The studio is located behind Payton’s residence and is not open for walk-ins.
